Concept Development - Typography - JP

Typography
Typography is the art and technique of arranging type to make written language most appealing to learning and recognition. The arrangement of type involves selecting typefaces, point size, line length, line-spacing and letter-spacing.

NYCTOPHOBIA
The font is quite distorted, which is good for the psychological sub-genre that we are thinking of creating in the opening sequence. The upper case lettering puts emphasis on the title, and the fact that it's a horror film, then the thick, bold lettering further emphasises the title. As a group, we are yet to decide on the title of our sequence, but the font seems as though it could fit any horror title.

FACE YOUR FEARS
The 'Face Your Fears' font would also suit the psychological sub-genre, as well as the slasher theme that we are going to develop, as the font looks like something has been smeared roughly, possibly by hand, and looks as though it could be blood. If we could make the font dark red and appear to look even more so like blood, and then incorporate it into the sequence, onto a piece of furniture perhaps, I think the effect would look natural, strong and show good use of editing and manipulation.

COLD NIGHT FOR ALLIGATORS
This font looks as though it would suit the genre of horror, but would most likely be harder to fit into the picture than, for example, the 'Face Your Fears' font, as the writing looks less handwritten and harder that the other fonts. Whilst the font looks good and may be appropriate for some horror films, it doesn't seem too appropriate for our concept.

TRUE LIES
The 'True Lies' font looks similar to 'Face Your Fears', in the way that it seems smeared. However it looks more edited and less realistic and natural compared to the other fonts, due to the fact it's in italics. For that reason it would be hard to manipulate into the scene and would, most likely, not look very scary or anchor our concept if we used it.

  1. This is a start - it is quite brief. You should be adding detail to each font, analysing it for connotations and linking to your concept. I would expect for L4 for you to also research typography used in your sub-genre to inform your concept development here.
