Technical Analysis - The Grudge - Anthony Pitts

I have chosen to do my technical analysis on the opening scene of 'The Grudge'

Duration of Shot
Camera movement, distance and angle
Mise-en-scene
Sound
3 seconds
Handicam shot, POV shot
Walking down an alley, there are walls either side of the alley, on the left side there is a house.
Birds chirping, sound of wind blowing in the trees, diegetic sound.
1 second
Black screen
Black screen
Sound bridge from previous shot.
3 seconds
POV shot, low angle shot, long shot, handicam shot.
Camera is looking up at the house, still walking down the alley.
Sound bridge, wind in the trees, birds, only diegetic sounds.
1 second
Black screen
Black Screen
Sound bridge from previous shot
2 seconds
Handicam shot, slight low angle, POV shot.
The person is now walking towards the door of the house. We still do not know who it is holding the camera.

You can hear the wind in the trees and the footsteps of whose holding the character whilst walking to the door.
2 seconds
Handicam shot, slight high angle shot, POV shot, Close-up of hand
The person holding the camera is now opening the door, we can see a close up of his hand twisting the handle.
The sound of the door handle turning and footsteps of the person holding the camera. Diegetic sound and footsteps are extra diegetic as they are not in the shot because we cannot see the person walking.
3 seconds
Small tracking shot, long shot
We are now seeing what is happening from a different perspective. We see the door opening downstairs from behind the upstairs railings.
The squeak of the door opening can be heard which is diegetic sound. There is a slight drone sound which is non diegetic as it has been added in.
2 seconds
Birds eye view, camera is looking down at the feet of the person holding the camera. POV shot.
The person holding the camera is looking down at the floor and we can see their feet. On the floor there are pieces of paper/tissue. The person steps into the room. Internal location.
The sound of the footsteps on the floor, these are now diegetic as we can see the source of the sound. We can still here the drone sound but we do not know where it is coming from, non diegetic.
3 seconds
Low angle shot, slight canted angle, pan up shot.
The person is now looking around the room and can see a lot more screwed up paper on the floor as well as a slippers which are not in their pairs. Internal location.
Non diegetic sound, music starts playing which creates a sense of unease.

1) I liked this shot because we can see the house which is haunted on the left which uses rule of thirds.

2) The reason I have chosen this shot is because it's from a high angle and we can see that the door is being opened but we still do not know who it is holding the camera so it helps to add to the sense of mystery.

3) The reason I have chosen this shot is because we can now see what it is that is possessing this house, but the lack of filler light means we are unable to know the true identity of the being.

4) In this shot we can see the beings face and from this we can interpret that it is a female like character who is haunting the house.

5) I have chosen this shot because we can see mess on the floor but the source of the mess is hidden from the audience so we are not aware of why it's there.

6) My final shot I have chosen is taken from a slight canted angle and we can now see the female like being looking towards the floor which hides her face.
